Abstract
The characteristics of surface products formed on zinc in slightly alkaline aqueous solutions have been studied. Measurements have been carried out on freely corroding zinc or on zinc galvanically coupled with iron, also in conditions of polarity reversal of the couple. Experimental techniques such as photopotential measurements and X-ray diffraction have been applied. The photoelectrochemical measurements allowed the determination of the n or p semiconducting properties of the surface products. It was shown that at high temperature or during the polarity reversal of the couple, n-ZnO was formed. Analogous series of measurements were performed on zinc electrodes under conditions of anodic oxidation in borate buffer.
