Abstract

We present a quantitative characterization of an optical limiting device based on nonlinear light scattering due to a photoinduced refractive index mismatch in colloidal suspensions of silica particles. We analyze the origin of the optical limiting process by direct measurements of the nonlinear scattering at 532 nm with nanosecond laser pulses and we assess the impact of the interface between the particles and the surrounding liquid in the suspensions.
