Abstract

This paper investigates the mechanical properties of polymer composites reinforced with natural fibers - banana, coconut sheath and jute. Natural fibers which are usually discarded away as agricultural waste have a good potential of being used as reinforcements. Epoxy resin is used as the matrix. The fibers are treated in alkali solution and the composites are fabricated by hand lay-up method. The fabricated specimens are tested for their mechanical properties according to ASTM standards. The potential to use these natural fiber composites in various automobile applications is analyzed. These natural fiber composites can be used to make various automobile accessories. The use of such green materials involves lesser cost and energy requirements. Natural fiber composites. being less dense, can be used to manufacture lightweight parts.
