Abstract

Objective To investigate the characteristics of impacted premolars in orthodontic patients. Methods The panoramic radiographs and information of 2031 patients were collected. These patients were treated by four doctors in the Department of Orthodontics, Yantai Stomatological Hospital from Jan. 1 2009 to Dec.31 2016. The information including prevalence of premolar impaction, gender and location of impacted premolar was collected. According to the palatal plane and the adjacent fully erupted first molar, the direction of crowns, long axis angle and the height of vertical dimension of second impacted premolars were statistically analyzed. Results 66 impacted premolars (61 second premolars and 5 first premolars) were diagnosed in 53 patients. The prevalence of impacted premolars in orthodontic patients was 2.6%. 35 patients were female and 18 male. Horizontal impaction of second premolars was common. Conclusions The prevalence of impacted premolars in orthodontic patients was high, especially in female patients. Most impacted premolars were found in the maxilla.
