Abstract

A multi-element alloy cladding was fabricated on low carbon steel by the TIG (tungsten inert gas) process using a multi-element alloy filler. The microstructure, crystal structure, and microhardness were evaluated using an SEM (scanning electron microscope), XRD (X-ray diffraction), EDS (energy dispersive X-ray analysis), and a microhardness tester. The wear resistance was also tested. A molybdenum-rich phase with a tetragonal structure and an Fe-rich phase with a body-centered cubic structure were obtained for the single layer cladding and double layer cladding of the alloy filler, respectively. The microhardness of the double layer (Hv 800) was greater than that of the single layer (Hv 500) due to the considerable increase in the molybdenum-rich phase. The cladding layer exhibited an excellent solution strength mechanism, and the wear resistance of the cladding was distinctly enhanced.
