Abstract
This paper reviews the major parameters to be considered when selecting fuses for the protection of transformers, capacitor banks and laterals. Overload, secondary-fault and internal-fault protection as well as fuse immunity to current surges (magnetizing and lightning currents, capacitor and cable charging, and motor start-up) are used to establish the required current ratings and time-current characteristics of fuses.
