Characteristics of deaf and hard-of-hearing students in Australian regular schools: hearing level comparisons

Abstract

Data from a large survey of deaf and hard-of-hearing students in Australian regular schools were analyzed by the students' level of hearing loss (mild, moderate, severe, profound). Data indicate the presence of more profoundly deaf students in such settings than had been previously believed. The personal characteristics of the students and their level of inclusion in the academic and social life of their regular school are analyzed by level of hearing loss and implications of the analyses for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in regular schools drawn out.
