Abstract

The Characteristics and performance of superpressure balloons in general and tetroons in particular are discussed. Parameters of tetroons such as cross-sectional area, volume and drag coefficients are evaluated. Three balloon systems are discussed: scaled tetroons, valved tetroons and tandem balloons. The ascent rates of the three systems are determined and compared. The effect of a large forced change in height of the superpressure balloon from its equilibrium height is discussed and expressions for the superpressure, stress and volume perturbations are derived.
