Abstract

Abstract This investigation deals with the study of 1 g/l alumina reinforced electroless Ni-B coatings on a low carbon steel substrate. Reinforced coatings were prepared from the as-received nano powders. The alumina nano particles were ultra-sonicated before being introduced into the coating bath. The reinforced coatings exhibited an improvement in hardness, and corrosion resistance. A significant increase of nearly 10%, was observed in case of the hardness of the reinforced coatings. Corrosion potential increased by about 6% with the addition of alumina nano particles. The agglomerated nano particles seem to embed in the nodular boundaries of the cauliflower like Ni-B morphology and in inter nodular porosities. This, in turn, improved the corrosion resistance by forming an intimate sacrificial layer on the vulnerable substrate material.
