Abstract

The depreciation in the economic output of the industrial sector today is mainly due to corrosion which can be monitored with the employment of inhibitors enormously. In this context, ionic liquids are new potent class of corrosion inhibitors because they are environmentally benign in nature. Owing to escalating ecological consciousness and stern environmental regulations it becomes extremely enviable to develop green and sustainable strategies to the prevent corrosion. The present chapter includes the most recent ionic liquids that are grappling with the corrosion. This chapter also covers the overall procedure for ionic liquids driven prevention of corrosion in detail with the entire theoretical and experimental data which instructs the weight loss, polarization parameters, thermodynamic parameters, surface analysis and computational studies. The relative study between the ionic liquids and other organic/inorganic inhibitors has been done by assessing the inhibitor efficiencies of corrosion inhibitors by considering the EIS parameters. The fundamental concepts associated with the EIS, potentiodynamic polarization, DFT studies have been discussed which will be of assistance to the novel researchers to comprehend their area of research effortlessly in a reduced amount of time and will be advantageous to the readers venturing for the initial time in this field.
