Abstract

This chapter discusses the process of integration to functions of two or more variables. Analogous to the Riemann sums of a single variable, there are similar types related to functions of two or more variables. The evaluation of double integrals by direct summation is at best tedious. The usefulness of the double integral derives from the fact that many physical and geometrical quantities be defined in its terms. The chapter discusses the applications of the double integrals and the fundamental theorem. It presents certain examples of the plausibility of the fundamental theorem for double integrals. The double integral is the two-dimensional analogue of the ordinary single integral.
