Abstract

The original moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method is briefly described here. The basic components of MPS, including the discretization models, the treatment of boundary conditions, the time marching algorithm, and the constraints to time steps, are presented. Specifically the basic ideas of the gradient, divergence, and Laplacian models are discussed. The simple yet effective treatment of free-surface, solid wall, and inflow boundary conditions is described. The semi-implicit algorithm for fully incompressible flow and the explicit algorithm for weakly compressible flow are shown. The time-step restrictions for stable simulations are also given. The chapter paves the way for further improvements in the following chapters.
