Abstract

Recently, carbon-based rubber nanocomposites (CBRNs) reinforced with a low-volume fraction of nanofillers have attracted great interest due to their fascinating properties. Incorporation of carbon-based nanofillers (CBNFs) into various elastomers was found to be responsible for a significant improvement in their overall mechanical and morphological properties. In a similar fashion, the rheological behavior of rubbers is seriously governed by the addition of CBNFs. The properties of rubber nanocomposites depend greatly on the structure of the polymer matrices, the nature of nanofillers, and the method by which they are prepared. It has been established that uniform dispersion of CBNFs in rubber matrices is a general prerequisite for achieving desired mechanical, rheological, and physical characteristics. This chapter addresses some recent developments in the fabrication methods of CBRNs. The effect of the mixing method on the properties of these nanocomposites and morphological development are discussed to deepen the structure–property relationship in CBNF-incorporated rubbers.
