Abstract

This chapter presents the basic structures of the Librarian Career Management Tool, a model built on the interaction between librarians’ career choices (and their motivations) and their functions. Depending on how these choices are related to the function(s), the librarian might face different opportunities and challenges in their career and professional development. One starting point for the model is when a librarian’s career decisions do not align with their function(s). Such discrepancy could lead to significant obstacles in their career and professional development. This chapter aims also to give a basic understanding of different ways to describe career development. Therefore four models and approaches to understanding career development are presented: traditional, boundaryless, and protean models, as well as an alternative approach to the last two. The presentation in this chapter is theoretical; for a more practical walkthrough of the model, see Chapter 5.
