Abstract

In this chapter some of the underpinning learning theory and instructional design models that support the design of digital education and training for health will be explored. The theories and development and design methodologies could equally apply to digital learning resources, modules, or whole courses. However the focus here will be on a digital learning resource format know as a reusable learning object (RLO) which as the name suggests is characterized as a short (10 minutes of learning), focused, self -contained digital resource covering a discrete topic. An example of a development methodology incorporating co-production, peer review, and pedagogical design, for digital learning resources for healthcare student education, patient education, and in the training of healthcare professionals (HCPs) will be described and demonstrated using three case studies.
