Abstract

Spectral imaging opens up new possibilities in biology and medicine for the analysis of chromosomes, single cells, tissue sections, and tumors. The SpectraCubeTM system combines spectroscopy with imaging and is based on Fourier transform multipixel spectral analysis. This chapter discusses spectral imaging and the SpectraCubeTM system. Recently developed spectral imaging methods have introduced an important technical improvement to the field of fluorescence microscopy. Spectral imaging measures light wavelengths from multiple points of an image. Spectroscopy records the interactions of light with matter, while imaging records and provides spatial information of the object. The chapter discusses the applications of spectral imaging in biology. The SpectraCubeTM has been applied to various biological studies. Spectral imaging can be used in the analysis of autofluorescence of plants.
