Abstract

In the 10th century, philosophical ideas and material started to infuse and inform Jewish thought. This chapter addresses aspects of this infusion. The focus is neither on the history of philosophy itself, nor on the content of philosophical writing and argument, but on the role of philosophy in the Medieval Jewish culture. The questions addressed pertain to e.g. how philosophy became part of Medieval Judaism, in what ways philosophy informed Jewish thought, and what were the motivations and impulses in these processes. The chapter also observes that relations between Judaism and other religions played a significant role in the incorporation of philosophy into the Jewish culture. Keywords:Judaism; Medieval Jewish culture; Philosophy
