Abstract

The human cardiovascular system provides a rich environment for the development and application of biomechatronic systems, particularly if we apply the mechatronic definition loosely. However, rather than considering a large number of possible topics superficially, this chapter has attempted to examine only three in some depth. The first section examines artificial hearts and ventricular assist devices, the second looks at internal and external pacemakers, and the final section looks at the development of an artificial pancreas in terms of glucose monitoring and insulin pump technology.
