Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the various logistical constraints faced during the installation of an offshore wind farm. The time frame for the installation offshore is limited due to weather and the capabilities of the equipment that is used, which creates a massive constraint. The direct access to the pier of a port is an added challenge as an easy access for any port customer means a very short turnaround time for their vessels and cargo. Moreover, the rotors, towers, and nacelles take up an enormous amount of space when preassembled and ready for unloading. Asking for this type of service for a relatively short-term contract is not the sort of business proposal that the project manager can sell easily to the port. The task of planning and renting a suitable staging area in a port that is favorably close to the offshore site should not be underestimated. The wind farm owner will have to nominate one or more ports believed to be useable as staging areas for the project and decide, together with the tendering team, which port to use and how to execute the transport to the site; storage of components; and preassembly, loading, and transport to the offshore site.
