Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of Lethaby's life in retrospect. A man of humble origins but of some ability, Lethaby survived conventional schooling, found congenial employment at an early age, moved with ease among the cultivated middle classes, and earned public recognition through his work. After a career as a productive and influential architect and designer, he became a leading figure in art education and gave long service in the care of old buildings. From records and personal testimonies, one can put together a clear picture of Lethaby's life, from the child raised in a kindly but puritanical household to the student who became Lauder's brilliant apprentice. Lethaby's first jobs and travelling scholarships ran together, and soon he was shaking the conservatives a little with his unconventional designs and exhibiting a decided will of his own. He went diffidently into Shaw's office but once there, his high spirits and jokes were unforgettable.
