Abstract
Bioimage informatics is a rapidly growing field with a strong foundation built on open-source microscopy software tools. Open-source software exists for all aspects of the life cycle of a modern imaging dataset, ranging from image acquisition and image analysis to visualization and dissemination. A large community has grown around open-source bioimage informatics, and a drive for interoperation between software tools written for different languages and frameworks has begun to unify these ecosystems. As these open-source tools are fundamental to bioimaging, they will continue to serve as a foundation for new developments. This chapter presents a survey of open-source bioimage informatics tools that have been developed and are currently popular in the biological microscopy field.
