Abstract

Milk oligosaccharides are carbohydrates that are unique in human milk. Most of their digestion is carried out by microbes in the intestine. Specific microbial digestion leads to synergies that appear to play significant functional roles in developing infants. These include production of short-chain fatty acids, and other metabolites provide immunoprotective as well as nutritional roles.
