Abstract

Different types of safety valves such as surface safety valve (SSV), Underwater safety valve (USV), Boarding shutdown valve (BSDV), subsurface safety valve (SSSV), as well as relief valves are explained in this chapter. Different requirements for the safety valves such as design, product safety level (PSL), actuation, and sand slurry testing are discussed. Different types of design for subsurface safety valves are included in this chapter. The reliability of the subsurface safety valves is largely dependent on the hydraulic control system. Key considerations for hydraulic control system such as hydraulic cleanliness are briefly discussed. Different choices of materials for SSSVs are included in this chapter. Safety relief valves which are installed on the valve cavity or on the actuator compensation system are reviewed at the end.
