Abstract

This chapter presents mathematical optimization techniques for mass integration including mass-exchange interception and rerouting of targeted species throughout the process. Since the interception devices in this chapter are limited to mass-exchange operations, the waste-interception network (WIN) becomes a mass-exchange network (MEN). The emphasis is on targeting pollution at the heart of the plant rather than dealing with pollutants in terminal waste streams. The chapter also provides a mathematical framework for tackling pollution as a multimedia (multiphase) problem. The development of strategies for segregation mixing and direct recycle are also illustrated with the help of case studies.
