Chapter Seven: Further Techniques of the Translation

Abstract

In the longer renderings, the translator did not invariably follow the principle that one Hebrew word should be rendered by a single Greek one. There are numerous cases where a single Greek word is used to render two Hebrew words which are synonymous or related in meaning. Frequently where words are repeated within a sentence or two the second element is not represented in Par where the reference is clear. A translator who felt it unnecessary to render a pair of synonyms separately would be even more reluctant to repeat himself at the bidding of his Vorlage. Prepositions tend to be repeated before co-ordinate nouns in Hebrew, but this practice is less common in Greek. Repeated prepositions are sometimes omitted.
