Abstract

The witness of Bible corresponds to Truth of God, known as personal being. Now epistemic self-sufficiency of 'strange new world within Bible' limits how this correspondence can be established and justified, and so coherence within Biblical witness - coherence understood as conformity to person of Jesus Christ - will be sign and demonstration of that correspondence. Torrance is prone to fall into trap of assuming that theological language only functions in a propositional manner, and ignoring mixed economy of theological speech: the doings of religious language are legion. Religious language does not simply play a scientific role, but an exhortative, emotive and rhetorical (in Aristotelian sense) one. Torrance offers us no account of mechanism by which religious language can be constructed in a manner analogous to natural scientific language. Keywords: correspondence; epistemic coherence; religious language; scientific language; Torrance
