Abstract

This chapter presents specific evidence for the existence of a geographically vast coherent network of Moriscos engaged in coordinated activity both inside Granada and throughout the Crown of Castile from 1587 to 1591. The members of the network appear to be Morisco merchants engaged in a coordinated manipulation of the legal system in order to circumvent the restriction on travel imposed on the Moriscos from Granada after their deportation to other territories within the Crown of Castile. The evidence for the existence of this network comes from documents concerning legal proceedings initiated by families from Granada claiming old Christian status. It is conserved in the Archivo General de Simancas (AGS) among the papers of the Junta/Consejo de Poblacion in the Camara de Castilla (CdC). While this documentation is well-known to historians working on Moriscos from Granada, its potential for enriching our understanding of the minority is nonetheless far from exhausted.
