Abstract

Since immemorial times, the use of traditional medicine was initiated and used throughout the decades. Rather, it can be considered as the origin of the new medicine, as it has abounded with innumerable practices and methods that might be somehow paved for the evolution of modern medicine. Traditional medicine has many definitions, names, as well as branches, and types often recognized among disparate nations and societies. Herbal medicine is one of the most dominant and popular types of traditional medicine. Till now, it is still an indispensable option for many people and maybe favored over modern medicine because of its availability, affordability, and considerably great extent of safety. Most pharmacological drugs are rooted, derived, or inspired by one type of medicinal plant or maybe another traditional medicine technique. One of the most substantial medicinal plants in traditional medicine is black cumin (Nigella sativa). Its fame goes back to its ancient history and its widespread use by most, if not all, cultures. It comprises several valuable compounds and nutrients, can be used in various forms and methods, has an abundance of medicinal properties that have been used in traditional medicine, and yet an area of research. This chapter displayed the evolvement of traditional medicine, uses of the black cumin, and its different properties throughout ages and cultures.
