Abstract

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, education can be divided into three periods as far as its cultural and ideological roots are concerned: the first stage of learning from U.S.S.R., the second stage of leftist education and the third stage of reform and opening-up. The introduction of Soviet education theories into China can be traced back to immediately before the May Fourth Movement. Learning from Soviet education is carried out through following channels. The first channel is scholarly translation. Secondly, Soviet experts were invited as consultants in the Ministry of Education and Chinese schools, and also to teach in universities and schools. Thirdly, new schools were established according to the Soviet education pattern. From the founding of the PRC to the era of reform and opening-up, Kairov's education theory reigned over the field of Chinese education theory. Keywords: Chinese education theory; Kairov's education theory; leftist education; May Fourth Movement; People's Republic of China; scholarly translation; Soviet education theories
