Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to present the history and functioning of, and the key issues surrounding, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). IRENA was created in January 2009 as a standalone international organisation dedicated to promoting renewable energy. It is headquartered in the United Arab Emirates and in October 2019 had 160 member states, with another 23 states in the process of accession. The agency’s mission is to promote the adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy, including bioenergy, geothermal, hydropower, ocean energy, solar energy and wind energy. This chapter will show how IRENA, despite its relative youth, limited budget and small staff, has already started to play an important role in global energy governance.
