Abstract

This chapter discusses the velocity and acceleration. It is assumed that O is a fixed origin, and at time t, a moving point is at the point P, whose position vector referred to O is r. After a small interval of time δt, the moving point has reached the point P' whose position vector is r + δr, and the arc PP' be of length δs. It is supposed that I1, I2 be unit vectors along OP and in the transverse direction where the transverse direction is defined to be the direction perpendicular to OP in the plane of OP, OP' whose positive sense is that of PQ. It is found that when δt → 0.2 is in the direction PQ. I3 be a third unit vector, perpendicular to the plane of OP, OP′ such that I1, I2, I3 form a mutually perpendicular right-handed system of unit vectors.
