Abstract
The biggest cave in the great gorge of Cheddar is the Gough's Cave. As soon as Gough got control of the cave, he built steps up the steep ascent and introduced gas with reflectors to throw a beam of light where required. Thus, he began his life work of exploration. He opened this old cave to the public in about 1880. It was reached by a steep ascent behind what is now a restaurant. The cave consisted of an enlargement of a lofty fissure and like the other caves of Cheddar, contained beautiful stalactite formation. The recent excavations for building the new restaurant have removed more of the debris or talus and made the approach to the Roman Cave possible. The Roman Cave, known to the Cheddar folk as the Long Hole, is a fairly extensive cave whose total length is 285 feet with a width of 10–25 feet. One of the most interesting results of the excavation is the valuable evidence that the cave afforded animal and human life of past ages.
