Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of dry friction clutches. Dry friction clutches, which are used on automobiles, consist broadly of conical and single or multiple plate types. The chapter describes the plate-type clutches and illustrates the forces acting on a simple plate clutch. The mechanics of plate clutches is usually concerned with the determination of the thrust on the disc, the torque transmitted, and withdrawal forces. The implication of constant rate of wear is that material is abrased at a constant rate that is proportional to the volume of the material worn away. The frictional rate of work is equal to the product of frictional force and velocity of rubbing. The mechanics of the friction of multi-disc clutches is similar to that of a single disc. The full load in the axial direction is carried by each disc. The torque transmitted is the sum of the torque for each contacting pair of surfaces that drive.
