Abstract

The chapter deals with the special structure of John's passion narrative in relation to the role given to the various actors. That within the telling of the passion story a new scene is opened in Jn 18:28 is made clear by the change to another place (the praetorium). The emperor, the imperial family and the interests of the emperor play a special and very important role in Ephesus. The emperor, concentrated in the cult of the emperor, is massively present in the city. The emperor is linked to all realities in the city. The games, which are organized either every year or every two or four or five years, become more important in and for the city and also for the emperor cult with which they are linked in a special way. The presence of the emperor is powerful. The interferences with the Johannine text are, therefore, tightly present. Keywords: Ephesus; God emperor; imperial family; Johannine text; John's passion narrative
