Abstract

There has been an increasing demand for biologically active natural compounds in pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and functional food formulations. Extraction techniques involved play a major role in extraction efficiency, stability, and purity of the components of interest. The present chapter discusses and compares conventional extraction techniques such as pressing, maceration, turbo extraction, decoction, etc. Modern extraction techniques include ultrasound-assisted extraction, pulsed electric field extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, pressurized liquid extraction, etc. The basic mechanism for extracting bioactive compounds and the advantages and limitations of the techniques have been discussed.
