Abstract

Before 2010, the problem of the earliest evolutionary origins of aging was left largely unaddressed. Starting with a theoretical study in 2010, L. Chao and colleagues studied the evolutionary origins of the soma-germline distinction in terms of the asymmetrical partitioning of damage, waste, and associated impairments. This work has featured an experimental analysis of patterns of damage accumulation and segregation in Escherichia coli.
