Abstract
The consideration of the controversies that arose around the text of the Bible both before and after Trent has prepared to appreciate the nature of the immediate reception of the Antwerp Polyglot and the Syriac New Testament that it contained. This chapter considers briefly the controversy in the Netherlands, Spain and Rome. It recovers as much of the Polyglot's final censura in respect of the Syriac edition as is possible at present. The Pope however did not want to slight the King so left the final decision to the Spanish theologians. Thus it came about that the Jesuit Juan de Mariana had to pronounce upon the Polyglot for the Spanish Inquisition. Mariana's judgment on the Polyglot appears in a letter to the Tribunal of the Inquisition dated 16 August 1577.
