Abstract

This chapter presents several issues related to troubleshooting Virtual Server 2005 R2, Automated Deployment Services, Virtual Server Migration Toolkit (VSMT), and the migration process from physical server to virtual machine. The bulk of the administrative functions and troubleshooting in Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 is done through the Virtual Server Administration Web site. The problems encountered with ADS are not really ADS problems at all; they are related to the way your network is set up. One of the key dependencies of the ADS environment is the Preboot Execution Environment (PXE). Whenever a system does not show up in ADS, or it always shows as “disconnected,” then it's likely that the PXE setup is the problem. Such problems can be solved by analyzing the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) configuration, DHCP Relay Agent, and other PXE servers. In case of VSMT, problems mainly arise in Virtual Network Setup, script creation, ADS integration, and migration from VMware to Virtual Server. Finally, the chapter discusses troubleshooting the migration process from physical server to virtual machine.
