Abstract

Changes in sleep are considered one of the hallmarks of aging. Studies of age-related sleep changes provide important insights into wider health and functional outcomes that occur throughout the aging process. Readers of this chapter will learn about age-related changes in sleep patterns and structure and acknowledge the theoretical debate regarding the functional significance of sleep changes with age. They will understand the importance of sleep for health and functioning in older adults, learn about sociodemographic and lifestyle factors that affect older adults’ sleep, and become familiar with sleep disorders that are common in this age group.
