Abstract
Plasma (glow discharge) is produced by exciting a gas with electrical energy. It is a collection of charged particles containing positive and negative ions and is electrically conductive and influenced by a magnetic field. Plasma is also intensely reactive, which is the reason that it can modify surfaces of plastics. It can be used to treat parts to make their surfaces harder, rougher, more or less wettable, and more conducive to adhesion. Plasma treatment is probably the most versatile surface treatment technique. Different types of gases such as argon, oxygen, nitrogen, fluorine, carbon dioxide, and water can produce the unique surface properties required by various applications.
