Abstract
Many crimes involve insiders abusing their privileges. While these people know their organization to a certain extent, the reality is that they are not aware of, or consider, all countermeasures that their organization may have. Given this, many insiders leave so many blatant tracks, that if one gets over the betrayal factor, the crimes seem comical. When one is in the process of investigating crimes against oneself or the organization, one needs to make sure that one does not ruin the investigation, either by destroying evidence or by doing something that is potentially going to overshadow the crime itself. Untrained investigators can also destroy or contaminate evidence that might be used in the future in a criminal prosecution. There are many poorly secured computer systems and people with lack of security awareness thus, making it easy for criminals to find a target. Persistence and the information available on the Internet is more than enough for a criminal to overcome a lack of skill or talent.
