Abstract

Recently, renewable and biocompatible polymers have gained increased relevance for food packaging applications. The use of nanostructures for the development of active and intelligent bio-nanocomposite packaging can be beneficial for food safety and quality. Natural polymers, such as chitosan, starch, cellulose and its derivatives, poly(lactic acid), and diverse proteins, have been combined with different nanostructures to obtain advanced materials with improved barrier and mechanical properties. Nanostructured antimicrobials combined with biopolymers have promising applications in the food industry as active packaging. Active nanocomposite films containing natural antimicrobials such as metallic nanoparticles, antimicrobial peptides, essential oils, or antimicrobial enzymes have been developed. These active nanocomposites are valuable packaging materials that can provide enhanced food safety. Bio-nanocomposites are promising materials for food packaging applications as a practical and safe alternative to conventional nonbiodegradable plastics.
