Abstract

In this book chapter, transformations of C=C or C=O motifs mediated by a variety of different enzymes, such as nitrile hydratases and nitrilases; hydantoinases and carbamoylases; epoxide hydrolases and dehalogenases; enoate reductases; Baeyer Villiger monooxygenases and aryl dioxygenases are described. Most of these reactions that are well known in classical organic chemistry often require very harsh reaction conditions and show very poor stereo- and regioselectivity. In this chapter, we envisage to demonstrate the high potential of the above-mentioned enzymes becoming a standard tool in synthetic chemistry. Each enzyme class is highlighted based on their catalytic mechanism, accessibility, synthetic application, and various examples for the production industrial relevant compounds are given.
