Abstract

Printers and print jobs can be managed from a central location by using Windows command-line utilities. The commands related to printer management in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are provided as Windows scripts. Commands use the CScript scripting host rather than the WScript scripting host, which is the default scripting host for Windows operating systems. Printer commands can be used on the local computer as well as on a remote computer. The Prnmngr command is used to view and install printers and the Prncnfg command is used to view and configure installed printers. Other commands discussed in the chapter include Prndrvr, Prnport, Prnqctl, and Prnjobs. These commands enable a user to manage printer drivers, create and configure TCP/IP ports, manage print queues, and manage print jobs, respectively. Finally, when working with printers attached to remote computers, a user must use an account that has permissions to connect to them using Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) services.
