Abstract

It was a popular belief that the Indian Ocean passively responded to El Niño-Southern Oscillation, whereas recent studies indicated that the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) plays an important role and influences Asian summer monsoon. Indeed, the TIO sea surface temperature warming in post-El Niño years features considerable regional variations. The dynamics of the south TIO are very important in modulating the sea surface temperature over the TIO. This chapter introduces how the south TIO ocean dynamics affect the TIO warming and its climatic impacts on the north Indian Ocean, especially for the Indian summer monsoon.
