Abstract

This chapter provides a state-of-the-art review of the off-vessel mooring line components, including chains, wire ropes, synthetic fiber ropes, connectors, as well as buoys and clump weights. The most common component used in mooring lines is chain, which is available in different diameters and grades. Wire rope has a lighter weight and a higher elasticity than chain when compared to chain of the same breaking load. Synthetic fiber rope, especially polyester rope, has become a popular choice for deepwater mooring applications due to its light weight and high elasticity. Different types of connectors are used for connecting adjacent chain or rope segments in a mooring line, such as shackles, Kenter links, pear links, C-links, and others. Buoys or clump weights are sometimes applied to fit for different mooring performance requirements.
