Abstract

Genitourinary infections include infections and syndromes associated with the urinary tract including cystitis, and infections of the kidney and perinephric space that are acquired from a hematogenous source, from a contiguous infectious process, or ascending from the perineum into the urethra and upstream from there. Infectious pathogens can affect the genital tract most frequently through sexual activity but may also be affected from extension from the urinary tract or from hematogenous seeding.
