Abstract
Pediatric tonsillectomy is a common procedure performed in children. This review identifies our current knowledge regarding indications, operative technique, perioperative care, and postoperative follow-up. Controversies and gaps in knowledge are discussed with a focus on the benefit of tonsillectomy for patients with recurrent pharyngitis, the use of polysomnography for pre- and postoperative assessment in patients with sleep-disordered breathing, the growing body of evidence to support partial intracapsular tonsillectomy as a lower-morbidity technique compared with total tonsillectomy, postoperative pain management and the use of narcotics, and the preoperative assessment and perioperative care of special at-risk populations.
