Abstract

This chapter discusses research and practical approaches to digital preservation in the digital library field. It begins with a review of terminology, definitions, and conceptual frameworks with a special emphasis on theoretical models in digital library research. Next, it examines the challenges, goals, and strategies in preserving digital objects. The focus of the discussion is on understanding the risks associated with preserving digital information and on the approaches developed by the preservation community to mitigate the major threats. Furthermore, this chapter discusses the state of digital preservation practice in the digital library field and provides a set of practical guidelines for preserving digital library assets. Finally, it reviews selected standards and technical solutions to preserving digital content.
