Abstract

This chapter summarizes achievements, identifies open issues, and discusses perspectives for future research. A major achievement in database technology is that different forms of component orientation now enable extensions and reuse in many different ways. The extensibility of database management systems (DBMSs) has been investigated for a long time in academia and industry, and is considered to be a great success story for database research. Many of the results obtained are now available in products. It is not yet obvious what the best solution for a specific application scenario would be and whether all these competing approaches will continue to coexist. Decisive criteria that will impact the outcome of this competition are support for the right set of components, appropriate support for application development, performance, adequate support for the development of components, and management of component libraries. Database technology has come a long way to meet the new challenges encountered in numerous current applications. Despite many problems that have already been addressed, many open questions remain that require more research.
